The UK’s First New Media Innovation & Entrepreneurship Gala Held in London
On July 12, 2023, the UK’s inaugural “I’m a Social Media Influencer” New Media Innovation & Entrepreneurship Gala, organized by the China-UK Youth Innovation & Entrepreneurship Association and the British Cultural Society, took place in London. The event brought together approximately 160 attendees, including representatives from the Chinese Embassy in the UK, the British Chinese community, Chinese-funded institutions in the UK, and local new media creators.
Keynote Speeches
Liu Hongmei, Counsellor for Overseas Chinese Affairs at the Chinese Embassy, congratulated the organizers. She noted that in the digital age, new media is transforming work and life, providing a platform for sharing Chinese culture and telling China’s story. This event united new media creators, offering a space to exchange ideas and experiences. Liu encouraged creators to abide by laws and regulations, spread positive energy, integrate into local society, and contribute to Sino-British cultural exchange and friendship.
Li Li, President of the British Cultural Society, emphasized the vital role of influencers and bloggers in the internet era. She praised their creativity and individuality in producing engaging content, such as text, images, and videos. The gala aimed to foster connections among UK-based influencers, encouraging them to explore broader perspectives in content creation. Li also stressed the importance of promoting healthy online culture and sharing traditional Chinese culture.
Du Yutong, President of the China-UK Youth Innovation & Entrepreneurship Association and a representative of young UK-based media entrepreneurs, shared his insights:
"Through new media entrepreneurship, we have a unique opportunity to share our creativity and passion. Success in this field requires innovative thinking, professional knowledge, and unwavering perseverance. We must continuously adapt to new technologies, uphold ethical values, and strive for excellence in a competitive market."
Yang Qingquan, Chairman of the Chinese Information and Advice Centre, encouraged young British Chinese to innovate and start businesses to bridge and integrate with mainstream society.
Influencer Insights
Dr. Lin Chaolun, Chinese interpreter for the Queen and six British Prime Ministers, shared his journey of gaining over 400,000 followers through knowledge-sharing and content about life in the UK. He inspired attendees with his entrepreneurial experiences and encouraged young people to embrace continuous learning and proactive entrepreneurship.
Guo Toutou, a renowned influencer, recounted his journey as a blogger, model, and host dedicated to promoting Chinese culture.
“As someone of Chinese and British heritage, I feel deeply connected to both cultures. Through my content and events, I aim to foster greater interest in China while growing my understanding of the country.”
Event Highlights
The four-hour gala featured influencers discussing strategies for capturing audience attention, creating engaging and useful content, and standing out in the competitive new media landscape. They emphasized building a positive, inspiring image for Chinese influencers abroad and promoting mutual understanding of Chinese culture.
Performances included displays of Chinese ethnic attire and cultural showcases by groups such as the Chinese Coconut Dance Troupe and the UK Guangxi Association Fashion Team. A highlight was a debut dance performance by a group of elderly Chinese women, demonstrating vibrant energy and community spirit.
